Pageant Launch

Two impressive new floats and intricately designed costumes have been revealed today as Adelaide counts down to the much-anticipated 2009 Credit Union Christmas Pageant.

Chloe Fox, Member for Bright, unveiled two of the six new floats that will feature in this years Credit Union Christmas Pageant, on Saturday 14 November. The remaining floats will be unveiled over the coming weeks.

Ms Fox, at todays launch, said that in its 77th year the theme for the 2009 Credit Union Christmas Pageant is families sharing memories.

"The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is a really important event for lots of South Australian families, so it is lovely that this years pageant reflects that," said Ms Fox.

"The first new float to be unveiled today is Grandpas Christmas Workshop. Elves, pixies, fairies and gnomes dance around Grandpa as he sits in his rocking chair taking a break from toy making while a toy train whizzes around him.

"With colourful toy blocks making up the structure of the float and larger than life human toys, our second surprise today - Christmas in Toytown - is a rainbow of colour with more than 17 toy characters travelling with the float on Pageant Day.

"In addition to the two new floats, an old favourite - London Bus - has had a new wardrobe created with a Mary Poppins theme for this years event, as well as being led for the first time by the Australian Classical Youth Ballet."

Chair of the Credit Union Pageant Company, Peter Evers, said the credit unions were gearing up for another magical community event this year.

"While Pageant Day is on 14 November, work on the floats, costumes, characters, dance routines, musical performances, logistics and the general running of the event takes place throughout the entire year to ensure its success," Mr Evers said.

"Its the premier event on the credit unions calendar, one we cherish, as it brings so much happiness to the entire South Australian community."

The new Royal Family float, which was unveiled at Government House a few weeks ago, was on display with the Pageant Royal Family mingling among the crowd together with Mini Float Design Competition winner Rodney the Red Bi-Plane.

More than 320,000 spectators are expected to line Adelaides streets on Saturday 14 November 2009 for the start of the Credit Union Christmas Pageant at 9.30 am. A Guinness World Record attempt for the worlds longest and largest Mexican Wave will take place at approximately 9.10am. The crowd will know what to do because there will be a NEW speaker system installed along the whole pageant route.

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant has had approval from Guinness that for the Mexican Wave attempt all participants will be counted by official volunteers with NO FORMS required to be filled out, as was the process in 2008. Also, the wave will be set-up to run along each side of the Pageant route - like a wave race along the whole of the events route from South Terrace to North Terrace.

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government and sponsored by six leading credit unions in South Australia - Savings & Loans, Australian Central, Community CPS Australia, Police, Powerstate, and Satisfac.
