Pageant second time lucky in Guinness World Record attempt

More than 320,000 spectators lining Adelaides streets this Saturday (14 November) for the Credit Union Christmas Pageant will make a second Guinness World Record attempt for the worlds largest Mexican Wave.

The Mexican Wave will take place at approximately 9.10am and the crowd will be told when the wave is starting through a new speaker system that has been installed along the whole Credit Union Christmas Pageant route.

An official from Guinness World Records, Chris Sheedy, will again be in Adelaide to oversee the wave and to verify whether a new world record has been set.

Chris Sheedy reinforces that a lot of work goes into achieving a Guinness World Record, especially one on this scale.

"In the past I have been lucky enough to witness several mass participation records and at the end of the day, record or not, all participants have a massive amount of fun," says Chris Sheedy.

Credit Union Christmas Pageant Event Director, Brian Gilbertson, is looking forward to another attempt at the record this year.

"South Australians came out in force last year and had a great time. Although we didn't get the world record, we're looking forward to getting the community together to try again on Pageant Day this year," says Brian Gilbertson.

"It is important to note that the wave will run along both sides of the Pageant route from South Terrace to North Terrace, hopefully in a free flowing motion. Achieving the record is not the priority - its all about having fun. Just to get the wave to travel from South Terrace to North Terrace will be a huge achievement."

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant has had approval from Guinness that for the Mexican Wave attempt in 2009 all participants will be counted by official volunteers with NO FORMS required to be filled out, as was the process in 2008. The count starts at 9.05am and therefore the crowd is requested to stay in their places until after the wave has passed in order for people to be counted.

The current world record for the largest Mexican wave was set in August 2008 by 168,000 people in Bristol, USA.

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government and sponsored by six leading credit unions in South Australia - Savings & Loans, Australian Central, Community CPS Australia, Police, Powerstate, and Satisfac.
