World’s biggest Pageant on the national stage

29 September 2014

The State Government aims to elevate the Credit Union Christmas Pageant to the national stage in 2015.

Acknowledged as the world’s biggest event of its kind, Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the Pageant should be recognised as a national major event heralding the start of Australia’s Christmas season.

“The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is a South Australian icon, attracting more than 300,000 people to the streets of Adelaide every year,” he said.

“Now in its 82nd year, the Pageant is the biggest and best in the world, and it’s time the rest of Australia shared the joy and excitement of Pageant Day.

“The Pageant delivers massive tourism potential for South Australia, and encouraging more people from around Australia to come to Adelaide for the Pageant would significantly boost our aim of building a local tourism industry worth $8 billion by 2020.

“I’d love to see us promoting Pageant and panda tours for interstate families,” he said.

Minister Bignell said the first step towards lifting the Pageant to national prominence would happen this year, with a special competition organised for local families to bring interstate loved ones to town for the 2014 event.

“We want people to tell us in 100 words of less who they would like to share Pageant day with, and why,” he said.

“A winning entry would be picked for families or friends in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, with a great prize package including return airfares to Adelaide for up to four people through Tigerair, and two nights’ accommodation at the Hilton Adelaide.

“The winners would also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Pageant before it starts, would meet and have a photo taken with Father Christmas before he climbs onto his sleigh, and would watch the Pageant from a special viewing area.”

The competition is now closed.

Credit Union Christmas Pageant Company chair Peter Evers said the credit unions were once again looking forward to the event and the opportunity to give back to the community.

“This year we’re asking people to share the Credit Union Christmas Pageant with someone they love. There are many ways to do this – either by seeing the Pageant live, on TV or by sending photos of yourself at the event to those you’re closest to,” he said.

“This is a great way to share the joy on what we like to think is the happiest day of the year.”

The 2014 Credit Union Christmas Pageant will be held on Saturday November 8.

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government, and is sponsored by four leading credit unions in South Australia – People’s Choice Credit Union, Beyond Bank Australia, Credit Union SA and Police Credit Union.
