More than 300,000 South Australians are expected to line the streets of Adelaide today at the Credit Union Christmas Pageant as it makes its way through the city.
Minister for Tourism, Gail Gago, says the Pageant has been spreading joy and magic to South Australians since the first event in 1933 with just eight floats and four bands.
“Today South Australia celebrates not just the start of the festive season but 80 years of the Pageant and in that time it has grown to the wonderful event that we look forward to each year,” Ms Gago said.
“This year we will see 147 moving sets including 250 clowns, 63 floats and 17 bands. We also will have nine walking sets, 10 dance groups a DJ and three choirs.
“The Pageant grows and becomes bigger and better each year.
"Today we welcome four new colourful floats including Winter Wonderland, Circus, Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Club and 80 Years Young.
“To celebrate 80 years of the Pageant we will also have the special 80 years float that shows a little of the Pageant’s history and is accompanied by 80 drummers.
“The Credit Union Christmas Pageant has broken records, lifted spirits, heralded the start of the Christmas season and been attended by hundreds of thousands of South Australians over the years.
Today is really special and an occasion to celebrate the sense of community this event generates,” she said.
Peter Evers, Chair, Credit Union Pageant Company, said the Pageant brought together its four leading credit unions - People’s Choice Credit Union, Community CPS Australia, Credit Union SA and Police Credit Union - in support of the event.
“We are pleased to sponsor this iconic Adelaide event for the 17th year running.
"We have more than 1000 Credit Union employees, and their friends and family, participating in this year’s event; taking on roles such as clowns, fairies or helping behind the scenes.”
The Credit Union Christmas Pageant will start at the corner of South Terrace at 9.30am, before proceeding to King William Street and onto Wakefield Street.
It will head down Pulteney Street, and continue along Flinders Street and back to King William Street before finishing up at David Jones on North Terrace.
Spectators will find all they need to know about this year’s pageant, including a route map, float list and Christmas activities, at the FREE Credit Union Christmas Pageant iPhone app on iTunes.
For the first time an Android version (slightly modified) is also available for download from Google Play.
