In 2012 we will celebrate the 80th year of the pageant. The first pageant was called the "Children’s Christmas Pageant" and was held in 1933. It was the first time the people of Adelaide had seen a parade and they did not know whether to stand and watch or walk along with it. Ultimately they followed the parade into Rundle Mall (then Rundle Street) and totally blocked the thoroughfare!
So much experience has been developed over those 80 years. The pageant incorporates all the elements of the arts, such as painting, sculpture, dance, singing, music, acrobatics, gymnastics, calisthenics, clowning and acting. Even our mechanics, welders and carpenters are creative mechanics, welders and carpenters.
In 2012, we will celebrate the pageant as a major arts event in our community. We look forward to seeing you there and will keep you posted about developments.
